Living room and overall paint

We’ve keep rearranging since we’ve bought the house almost 3 years ago. We can’t seem to get a good layout. We’d like a more modern style. We’re not sure how we feel about the colors, we loved it at first but the light feels like it always is off. Would you paint the walls a brighter color, or change furniture to fit better? Both? The whole house is that color scheme, from cabinets to doors it’s a bit overwhelming. We’re comfortable committing to the price of paint and are ok redoing decorations as most the stuff is from our old apartment. Where I’m standing is the dining table with the kitchen and dining area on different tile.living room pics imgur
